A dedicated player exists for two reasons: better analog output than a phone, and a device that doesn't interrupt music with notifications. Modern DAPs split into two camps.

Android-based players run Tidal, Qobuz and Apple Music natively over Wi-Fi, and double as USB DACs at your desk — the flexible choice. Pure-music players run a stripped-down OS instead, which buys you faster startup, longer battery and fewer distractions, at the cost of streaming apps. Either way, look at the balanced output power first: it tells you what the player can actually drive. Most also work as Bluetooth receivers and USB DACs, so one unit can cover the commute and the desk.
